READER'S NOTEBOOKS
Use
an ordinary Walmart composition book, cover with
a scrapbooking sheet or let your students decorate a piece of
cardstock, and seal with clear contact paper.

You can buy your class Fountas
& Pinnell Reader's Notebooks from Heinemann. They come
in sets
of 5 for $29.00 or sets of 25 for $137.75 (YIKES!) Here is an
upclose
look at the F&P notebooks.
However, you can just create your own notebooks with a 3-ring

NOTES
Here are some random
notes I took while watching Happy Reading by Debbie Miller.
-- Transitions:
Debbie uses music as transitions. The students know when they
hear a particular song, it is time to stop what they are doing,
put things away, and get to the carpet. (or wherever she teaches
them to go) She also makes each student a book of all the songs
they sing in class. One CD she uses is music by Katherine
Dines. Another is Chicken
Soup for Little Souls.
--
Documentation: Debbie uses small memo books (like at
the Dollar Store) to conference with each student. This is an
alternative to sticky notes and a tabbed binder for documentation.
-- Book
Choice: Debbie uses
familiar books when teaching a new skill. This is so children
are more focused on the skill being taught rather than trying
to understand the story for the first time.
-- Nonfiction: Debbie encourages kids to write with they
learned in their nonfiction text in their own words. It will be
clear if they understood.
